Now that we are in tax season you should make your clients aware of multiple tax and IRS scams that will be circulating this year. Please make all your clients aware that the IRS doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers by email, test, or social media. There are two major types of IRS scams we see email phishing scams and phone scams. There are many different messages they use but they are all easy to sniff out for one reason, the IRS doesn’t use email to initiate contact with tax payers. If you are not already dealing with the IRS regarding a tax issue they will not reach out to start a new investigation via email.
The IRS generally reaches out to taxpayers via USPS before contacting them by phone. The IRS will not leave threatening phone messages, threaten to immediately involve local authorities, or demand payment via debit or gift card. Any payment will also always be made to the IRS not a third party.
Keep your clients informed about the danger of these threats.
